Chelsea vs. Manchester City this week may be the last defining game of the Premier League title race.
The Blues hold a healthy lead at the top of the table, but after a shock defeat at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday, a second loss on the spin to a direct rival could get bums squeaking at Stamford Bridge.
Indeed, if results go badly, Antonio Conte’s men could be kicking off at Bournemouth this coming weekend with Spurs just a point behind them! Conversely, a win might well deliver the decisive blow in demotivating their competitors.
Man City’s visit is a big one then, and a game the Blues are sure to be fired up for. Pep Guardiola’s side have endured a mixed campaign under the Spaniard’s tutelage, but they have a squad filled with talent, even if it is a bit lopsided between defence and attack, which got us thinking: which Citizens would Chelsea fans like to have in their squad?
The question was asked earlier this week and the results are in… Here are the top three (amazingly, Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling didn’t make the cut)…
3) Leroy Sane
Sane’s transition to English football hasn’t been quite explosive as some predicted, but Pep Guardiola’s patience with the pacey German looks to be paying out now, with the former Schalke man having scored some important goals of late, including the opener vs. Arsenal on Sunday.
With Chelsea’s 3-4-3 demanding speed, technique and footballing intelligence, it’s easy to see where Sane could fit in in a Conte team, even though this transfer is highly unlikely.
2) Gabriel Jesus
Despite only arriving over the winter, Gabriel made a huge impact at Man City before an untimely injury hit hard. The Brazilian netted three goals in just four league appearances for the Citizens, ousting Sergio Aguero from Guardiola’s XI in the process – no mean feat, that!
With his sheer quality and amazing potential, it’s little wonder Chelsea fans are wishing he was in west London rather than Manchester.
1) Kevin De Bruyne
And top of the list we have De Bruyne… a player Chelsea sold not that long ago! Indeed, the Blues deemed the Belgian surplus to requirements in 2014, but his career has been a raging success since with a spell in Germany at Wolfsburg having earned him a £50m+ switch to the Etihad Stadium, where he’s become a key player.
Able to play in any attacking position, De Bruyne would be a useful tool for Conte and could compliment the qualities of his compatriot, Eden Hazard. What could have been, eh?
