Lascelles was not picked for Gareth Southgate’s last England squad, something that enraged supporters on Tyneside, but you’d be hard pushed to find a defender in England performing better than the Newcastle captain.
The former Nottingham Forest man was at his brilliant best once again in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Leicester, making a remarkable 12 clearances and also winning three aerial duels.

Lascelles has formed a fantastic partnership with Florian Lejeune, and the two of them have likely been the most influential part of Newcastle’s revival in recent weeks.
The Magpies are now sitting pretty in 10th, ten points clear of the drop zone.
Lascelles may be particularly happy with the performance at Leicester given it came opposite Harry Maguire, who was picked in Southgate’s England squad.
