After news emerged that the Inter Miami co-owner would be awarded a knighthood as part of the King's Birthday Honours List, reports have circulated of the Manchester United icon's unbridled joy. Last night, a 'friend' told The Sun: "Quite simply, this is the ultimate accolade for David. Forget the medals, the trophies, the global fame and the millions in the bank. As a genuine and devoted royalist, this means more to him than anything. It is his lifetime’s work – and he’s still only 50. People don’t seem to realise how hard David works. His determination and work ethic is second to none. Despite all the setbacks, he knew he could turn things around and prove people wrong. And he’s done it. His family and friends are incredibly proud, and David himself is beyond happy. After all these years, he’s still a bit of a mum’s boy and is so thrilled his mum Sandra gets to see this. It is a huge moment in the Beckham clan."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Ex-Real Madrid star Beckham, who received an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) back in 2003, has long harboured desires to receive a knighthood, and now he has got it. Beckham played his part in London's successful bid for the 2012 Olympics, has been a special ambassador for Unicef since 2005, and more recently as an ambassador for The King’s Foundation. The proud patriot is a footballing great, and now he will receive this coveted honour, too.

It may be some time before Beckham receives this honour in person, as tennis great Andy Murray was named in the Queen's 2017 New Year's Honours list but only received his knighthood in May 2019 at Buckingham Palace.
